Why Become a Rabbi?

Many people have asked me “why become a rabbi”. For me it is about sharing my love of Judaism and the richness that exists within the tradition as a way to make our lives more meaningful and as a forum for making this world a better place.

There is such beauty and such joy in the positive mitzvot (commandments) that I want to help people discover that beauty and joy for themselves. Whether it is tasting apples and honey, building a sukkah, lighting the Chanukah lights (and as the text explains we add one each night to increase our joy rather than diminishing it), hearing the Megilah, smelling the spices as Shabbat comes to a close, our tradition is one that celebrates the senses and that adds to our joy. Bringing that joy to the next generation and the next and the next is how Judaism and me keeps going and going and going.
