Houses

I am very grateful. Relieved. We rented a house this weekend in our new community. It is light, bright, airy. It had everything we wanted, and then some. It is in safe neighborhood with nice neighbors. It has a backyard that abuts wetlands. It is very pretty. It wasn’t easy to find this gem. What this means is we are very fortunate, probably even lucky. We are in better shape than most people in the world. So many people live in substandard housing. They live in unsafe neighborhoods. They don’t have safe drinking water. More than half their monthly incomes go to housing costs. American families can be one paycheck away or one hospitalization away from homelessness. The statistics are daunting. For years I have supported such organizations as the Lowell Hunger Homelessness Commission, the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership, the Merrimack Valley Project, and Habitat for Humanity. I will find similar organizations in our new community. In the meantime, I will echo the words of Ma Tovu, “How goodly are your tents O Jacob, your dwelling places O Israel.” We know we are very, very fortunate.
